wept
installation by Irene Loughlin and Cindy Mochizuki
An exploration of the residues of trauma and what that might appear materially as a manifestation. Salt is used as the remnant of a body or bodies and the residue of grief as in the salt of tears. This work is an experiential piece that evokes feelings of the psyche and the deep caverns and recesses of memory. We formally created a heap or a mound that suggested a sweeping away into the corner or a leaking out through a crack in the wall. The work is situated in relation to shorelines or an ocean, and references monuments and memorials. Mini speakers are revealed in the salt and suggest periscopes, or a kind of technological plant life. They take on a confrontational, human quality and are imbedded into the man-made landscape within the gallery space. An abrupt dichotomy occurs between the quality of natural salt and these rigged sculptural wires. In addition, the effect of the silent and muffling quality of salt creates a quiet, contemplative piece that requires careful attention.
