nadia
As a means of revisiting the implications of this period of time and the work of Comaneci, a group of young women gymnasts performed a balance beam routine in front of a large video projection of Nadia Comaneci, the Romanian star gymnast of the 1976 Montreal Olympics. The work was positioned and performed for the crowds that passed from the Waterfront Skytrain terminal in Vancouver into the lobby of the old railway building during rush hour. A text bar running beneath the balance beam referenced the first score of a perfect ten in history by Comaneci. Simultaneously, the aesthetics of the work explore aspects of ambiguity surrounding the celebratory, spectacle, and accomplishment in relation to current post-feminist thought.
